What’s your best guess? Weight loss, a smaller beer gut, more money in my pocket, better sleep, clear eyes, improved health? NO NO NO and NO!!! IT’S MENTAL FREEDOM! That’s the BIGGEST gift of all and the reason why my “Sober Summer” continues.
I have received so many calls and comments since chronicling my experiment that I sense this is a hot topic for many of you. People stop me all the time to share their story of sobriety or discuss their interest in cutting down or stopping altogether. It’s definitely a thing!
I don’t know about you but when something is on my mind for a while, that’s a sign to address it. It could be anything from eating habits to lack of exercise to relationship struggles. It’s a horrible feeling to be weighed down by a constant playlist of the same old ruminating thoughts. Isn’t it?
Eating and exercise habits never took up much space in my head BUT that daily glass of wine or 2 sure did! In the grand scheme of things a glass of wine during the week is not going to kill anybody but it really bugged me and it was a habit that was tough to shake. (I’ll address in detail how I stepped out of this habit in a future post).
Although I have saved money and I am sleeping better, the MENTAL FREEDOM that I now have is the biggest gift of all! I don’t think about it anymore. I no longer weigh the pros and cons of having a drink. I no longer beat myself up for lacking the willpower to skip the wine at dinner. I no longer wonder if I’m tired due to alcohol, stress or lack of sleep. It honestly feels like a 10 lb weight has been lifted. As an added bonus, I don’t feel like I am missing out on anything. I still go out and I still have fun!
So, what about you? What’s your most popular mental playlist these days? It doesn’t have to be alcohol. It could be anything that is weighing you down. Most of us have something!
